Bushera: The organic energy drink from South Western Uganda
2021 May 15th
If you are from East Africa, you have probably had some bushera. And for those who have not – bushera is a traditional Ugandan fermented drink made from either millet or sorghum. Originally from western Uganda, bushera has become the go-to natural beverage, popular for giving energy. The drink is also a great organic option for quenching your thirst on a hot day. It’ll leave you not feeling hungry for hours too!
Bushera is made by first soaking millet or sorghum in water for three to five days, drying and crushing it into a thick paste. Water and flour are then mixed and heated for about 15 minutes over high heat. The mixture is then chilled in the fridge and is ready for drinking.
Production of the drink started locally in South – Western Uganda, in the hills of Kabale and Rukungiri, and has grown into one of the most popular drinks in the country. While bushera is not alcoholic, in Uganda, sorghum and millet are also fermented to make other traditional alcoholic beverages.
