Whether you prefer almonds, pistachios, walnuts or peanuts, nuts are a popular snack option. Groundnuts, also known as peanuts, are a popular snack in Uganda and other tropical countries. Unlike other nuts that are classified as tree nuts, groundnuts belong to the legume family.
Here are three nutritional benefits of adding groundnuts to your diet:
- Great sources of fat, fiber, protein, and magnesium. Groundnuts are an inexpensive option for protein compared to meat. On the other hand, while they are high in these nutrients, they are low in carbs, making them a great option for people who do not want to gain weight.
- Reduce risks of heart disease. Studies have shown that groundnuts can help lower the risk of high blood pressure & cholesterol levels, owing to nutrients such as magnesium that are known to be heart-healthy nutrients.
- Boosts memory. Groundnuts are also known to contribute to your brain health. Nutrients such as Vitamin E and Niacin help to boost memory and strengthen cognitive function. Studies have shown they can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
In Uganda, groundnuts can be had as a snack or pounded and made into a thick groundnut stew. Look out for the recipe!
